eric prydzs pryda label has again delievered some stunning pieces of work this year that have been caned by pretty much everyone. tracks like rymd, armed, ironman, muranyi and maddeferrys have all been licensed to pretty much every compilation out there and have generated quite a stir. this time around europa gets an airing - this is another walloping production that has been doing the rounds with certain djs since the summer. it is a typically enormous club track with its building synth chords and huge breaks and drops. on the flip odyssey is also a killer with its slightly more subtle funky feel. this is another 2 track monster that will not go away!! dj support - pete tong, sasha, jon digweed, sebastian leger, eric prydz

bitches brew are back with their next wild installment - purple somersault. if the previous release was filed under country dub tronica, this release is psychedelic surf cosmic disco. kind of like link wray wipes out with giorgio moroder. an interesting and rather beautiful concept, in fact the whole wild rumpus story is rather interesting and beautiful. two pioneers of forward thinking music, but from very different backgrounds combine to make the kind of music you simply cant ignore but at the same time cant quite put your finger on.

in the year of punk 1977, the jams exploded onto the music scene with this seminal debut album. the raw, unfettered aggression of the bands approach was well in keeping with the spirit of the times, but the heart of their songs and sound lay in the mod movement of the mid 60s. singer/guitarist paul weller comes off like a cross between joe strummer and the young pete townshend, bashing unreservedly through slow down, one of the r&b tunes that inspired the original mods. weller extols the virtues of frenzied dancing and nonconformist youth culture over the raging three chord attack of bassist bruce foxton and drummer rick buckler. the pure punk insouciance of his words and delivery is a perfect match for the raging but hooky arrangements, which basically consisted of the band walking into the studio and blazing through their live set. rickenbacker guitars never sounded so thick, and skinny ties never seemed less geeky.

black rocket is a banger in the vein of the dirty 98 bristol sound that was cherished by folks like decoder and tech itch. a reverberating wood block snare, a big fat distorted bassline and dizzying white noise to fill up any frequency space that was left make this track a tough pill to swallow.

a classic bit of space disco from the french scene of the 70s. four long tracks that are all pretty darn moogy, and pretty darn great! the work here would fit nicely with some of the best keyboard heavy club of the us scene at the time! not exactly like some of the work on p&p, or the grooves of el coco over at avi - but not that dissimilar either, and often put together with a spare, simple approach thats a welcome contrast from overblown disco of the time! most numbers build up from a funky bassline and beats - adding in the keyboards with great relish, and really letting them jam and get crazy over the top. theres certainly a bit of cosmic fusion going on here too

claude vonstroke returns with his first original record in over a year. this time he partners with long time friend and upcoming producer, christian martin. this is a melodic hybrid of techno and house with influences as far away as drum n bass. the flip side features a remix by super hot producer gabriel ananda and newcomer alice rose. they playfully twist the main theme throughout, sprinkling in stabs to the constantly building groove. many people have said the original record sounds like a follow-up to >whos afraid of detroit?< but we will let you decide what to think for yourself.

tony lionni is the new signing here at versatile. born in liverpool, his love for the music was passed on to him by his father, a record collector and former dj, who introduced him to crate-digging at the early age of eight. his roots stem from black music. hip-hop will become his musical bases before he discovers the acid-house explosion at the mythical hacienda in manchester. he naturally starts mixing in the late 80s/early 90s, playing a mixture of rare groove, deep-jazz, deep house, etc. he then turns to production and is noticed by gilb-rs fine-tuned ears who signs him on the spot. releases on labels like wavetec and mule musiq are planned further in the year. listening to papaia one cant help to think that 2008 will be the year that progressive house will make its comeback. it has been a long time since we had heard such a simple and effective kick and bass intro. the hi-hat then come in along with a small acid sound. the filter opens before the rhythm accelerates. in the middle of the track, the main melody gets dropped in, arms raise and the listener gets lost in the darkness of the night. on the b side, shuffle explores the deeper roots of lionni. the title is surely a reference to the beat, which is predominant in this track. once again the hi-hats are up infront mixed to percussive sounds, which undulate to the rhythm of the bass, making this track an essential tool, ready-to-use and be mixed into almost anything

hyperdub kick off 2008 they way they intend to proceed, with new tracks from a new artist. on her debut release, ikonika comes with her own very unique, warped yet soulful bleep sound. with shape shifting beats that switch styles every few bars its hard to pin these two tracks down... cos if it was easy, it just wouldnt be hyperdub. both tunes are one minute minimal, one minute maximal, driven along by ikonikas special combination of wonky synth and deep swingin sub bass melodies that place them somewhere between an early, blocky grime instrumental and the sweeter side of detroit techno ? except with better bass of course! who needs a vocalist when your synth can sing like this? quite how kode9 manages to keep unveiling new producers of such abundant talent is a conun drum, but one to be cracked some other time when we?re not so busy keeping up with his astonishing labels ceaseless march into the future.

when i first started making the drum on my mpc it sounded like a battle of drums i then added some stabs from the machines, trying to make it sound like the oldschool chicago tracks. this track is all about editing, drum programming and of course the inimitable tap repeat touch that only the mpc can generate. the end result is ninted house, a pure floor killer for all you real house heads. the clash is not a reference to the band but i felt the track goes well with ninted house it has the same mpc groove. stabs and hip hop sampled voices that remind us of those kind of tracks, where editing and sound mixing are more important than the musical elements. its that breadth in house music that i love. enjoy those two floor killers and dance ur ass off! franck roger
